BREAST IMAGING

WHAT IS BREAST MRI?

Breast MRI is the MRI examination of the breast using special breast coils (antennas) in MRI devices.

Breast MRI is an MRI scan performed using special breast coils (antennas) in MRI machines. During this scan, the patient is administered intravenous contrast material to enhance the visibility of cancers.

Breast MRI is the most sensitive method for detecting breast cancer. However, breast MRI is not a substitute for mammography as a breast cancer screening test for women at normal risk.

Breast MRI is frequently used to further detail suspicious findings detected on mammography or ultrasound or to determine the extent of a detected cancer.

Breast MRI is also used as a screening test in patients at high risk of developing breast cancer due to personal or family history characteristics.
